George Lopez: The Complete First Season

2002-03, Not Rated

Taking a formula that powered The Drew Carey Show and making some adjustments, producer Bruce Helford (who also developed Carey's show) created a nearly equally successful vehicle for fast-rising comedian George Lopez. Actress Sandra Bullock also produced and had a recurring role as "Accident" Amy, continuing to demonstrate her deft ability as a physical comedienne. While Lopez was also blue collar, the twist here was that he was promoted to a white-collar management job, making him a vocational fish out of water. On the home front, Lopez had the support of his devoted wife Angie (Constance Marie) and kids Carmen (Masiela Lusha) and Max (Luis Armand Garcia). Add a clueless sidekick named Ernie (Valente Rodriguez) and the dynamic was complete. Building on Lopez's stand-up comedy, which focused a lot on family, George Lopez ends up being a serviceable sitcom in a sea of the mundane. (P.F. Wilson) Grade: B
