A Warren County canoe rental has closed, but the land it stood on will be protected for generations to come.
The Little Miami Conservancy announced this week that it has acquired five properties totaling 26 acres along the Little Miami River around Oregonia that formerly belonged to Morgan’s Canoe and Outdoor Adventures. Those properties will be transferred to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Natural Areas and Preserves for long-term stewardship and to be turned into a nature preserve.
This project was made possible by the Susanne Geier Peters Foundation, which has a long history of working alongside the Little Miami Conservancy and the Morgan family in its conservation efforts. The Little Miami Conservancy says the collaboration ensures the river will remain clean, wild and protected, preserving its natural beauty as well as the recreational opportunities it offers.
“We are honored to continue this legacy of conservation, ensuring that future generations will be able to enjoy and appreciate the Little Miami River for decades to come,” Jason Brownknight, executive director of the Little Miami Conservancy, said in a press release.
The Morgan family has played a pivotal role in providing access and stewardship of the Little Miami River for over 60 years through their canoe rental business. They say while the decision to close their Ohio location was difficult, it reflects their commitment to preserving the river and the surrounding land.
“The Morgan brothers, our wives and families would like to personally thank each and every one of our guests who have supported our family business and the Little Miami for these many years,” said Dirk Morgan. “It has been an incredible journey, and while we will no longer be operating along the Little Miami River, our commitment to conservation remains steadfast. We are grateful to the Little Miami Conservancy, ODNR and the Susanne Geier Peters Foundation for helping us ensure the future of the river.”
The Morgan’s Canoe and Outdoor Adventures location in Brookville, Indiana, will remain open. You can learn more at morganscanoe.com.
