The first product of a new collaboration between musician and Walnut Hills resident Ric Hordinski and photographer Michael Wilson will be debuting at 7 p.m. this Thursday (May 24) at Hordinski’s The Monastery recording studio, 760 William Howard Taft Rd. in Walnut Hills.
It is the short film Signs & Wonders, which features the fading “ghost signs” that long ago were painted on the sides of the neighborhood’s many brick buildings, often as a form of advertising or business identification. The two are working on a larger documentary of the subject, “Now. Here. This.”
In a press release from the Walnut Hills Redevelopment Foundation, a supporter of this collaboration, Hordinski said this about the project: “A couple of years back, I started noticing these beautiful relics. Spectral reminders of our history in this neighborhood. We’re highlighting things like the sign for the first African-American owned bank in Cincinnati, the Frisco Lanes Bowling sign and the giant ad for Coca Cola that adorns the side of the newly renovated Trevarren Flats building. Many of these date from the 1940s or earlier.”
Hordinski composed the score for Signs & Wonders while Wilson did the photography. Admission is free for the screening, and there will be an opportunity to donate toward their finishing of Now. Here. This.
