IndieWire has just posted a story about the new trailer and growing interest in the movie, which was filmed in Cincinnati and Dayton and may well be Robert Redford’s last role before retirement: Among the local sites that can be glimpsed is Northside’s Blue Jay Restaurant and the city skyline. But perhaps the most arresting vision is of a large, low, circular and strikingly Modernist “American Bank” building that appears to be in a sprawling suburbia.
Here is what IndieWire said: “Director David Lowery is following up last year’s haunting elegy A Ghost Story with a distinctly more crowd-pleasing premise.The Old Man and the Gun, which recently released a brand new trailer, stars Robert Redford in his alleged final role — as an aging bank robber who serves his stick-ups with a smile. The film also stars Sissy Spacek as Redford’s love interest, and the new trailer shows a lot more of accomplices Danny Glover and Tom Waits.
“Written by Lowery from an article by David Grann, The Old Man and the Gun tells the true story of Forrest Tucker and his unlikely escape from San Quentin at the ripe age of 70. Executing a string of heists, Tucker’s story captivated the public and confounded authorities. The film also follows detective John Hunt (Casey Affleck), who is charmed by Tucker during his pursuit of the aging bank robber. The Old Man and the Gun also stars Tika Sumpter (Southside with You), John David Washington (BlacKkKlansmen), and Isiah Whitlock Jr. (The Wire). Fox Searchlight will release The Old Man and the Gun in theaters on September 28.
The film premieres at next month’s Toronto International Film Festival. It is tentatively scheduled to open here Oct. 12.
