An exclusive paint-and-sip event at the Pendleton Art Center will benefit the Tri-State’s federation of social justice charities while honoring famed pop artist Keith Haring.

Only three of 11 seats at the event are left, but anyone can make a donation to the cause. A $65 ticket will grant entry to an evening of art directed by local artist and teacher James Reynolds. All proceeds and donations go to the Community Shares of Greater Cincinnati, which serves the fields of social and economic justice, environmental sustainability and animal welfare.

The Not Your Average Paint and Sip: Keith Haring for Community Shares event is on Aug. 24 from 6:30-9 p.m. A candlelit studio will be open to ticketholders and Reynolds will provide individual instruction and lead a discussion about gay activism, AIDS and the work and influence of Keith Haring. There will also be a full, open bar with non-alcoholic options. The fundraiser has gained $520 so far; it ends on Aug. 24.

“You get to create as though you are an artist,” Reynolds said in a promotional video, meaning participants will have access to tons of supplies and the expert direction of Reynolds.

Unlike other paint-and-drink events, participants can choose which Haring artwork to recreate or inspire an original piece. Reynolds has over 21 years of art education experience and will cultivate a session of creative freedom as opposed to a paint-by-numbers approach.

Even if the name Keith Haring sounds unfamiliar, his artwork is unmistakable. His illustrations emerged in the late ’80s out of the graffiti subculture of New York City. Harings’ colorful imagery typically represents animated figures and symbols that appear simple but evoke movement and emotion. Haring died in 1990, after devoting his mostly public artwork to various social causes and establishing the Keith Haring Foundation, which provides funding to AIDS organizations and awareness.
