One of the most electric Cincinnati Reds of all time will sign a new one-day contract with the team before retiring as a Red.
Brandon Phillips played 11 seasons with the Reds from 2006-2016 at second base. Nicknamed “Dat Dude BP,” he earned three All-Star selections, four Gold Gloves and a Silver Slugger Award in his time with the Reds. One of the most dynamic infielders of his era, he combined elite defense with power and personality. He currently holds the Reds’ franchise record for most hits, home runs and RBIs by a second baseman.
After leaving the Reds, he played for the Atlanta Braves, Los Angeles Angels and the Boston Red Sox, who won the World Series in 2018. In the years after, he appeared on several minor league teams. One of those teams was the Lexington Legends, who regularly competed in exhibition matches against the Northern Kentucky-based minor league team Florence Y’alls.
He will sign a ceremonial one-day contract with the Reds Saturday and then officially retire. On Friday, Reds TV broadcaster Jim Day will host a postgame Q&A with Brandon Phillips, where fans across the stadium will hear from him on the importance of retiring as a Red and his recent induction into the 2026 Reds Hall of Fame.
“Brandon Phillips was an incredible baseball player. He brought a style and personality that Reds fans absolutely loved,” said Phil Castellini, Reds President & CEO, in a statement. “He was a cornerstone of our club and one of the most dynamic players in the game. The connection he built with this city was real and retiring him as a Red is our chance to honor that unforgettable relationship.”
It’s not only Phillips that the Reds are celebrating this weekend. As part of Reds Hall of Fame Induction Celebration Weekend, franchise icons Aaron Harang, Reggie Sanders and Lou Piniella will also be honored during postgame events throughout the weekend.
