A Beacon of Hope will stand watch outside the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center for a limited time this spring.

The Beacon of Hope is an 11-foot-tall bronze statue commemorating Harriet Tubman, the unshakeable abolitionist and most famous Underground Railroad conductor, who helped rescue dozens of enslaved people. The statue will be unveiled at a special ceremony at the Freedom Center plaza at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 4. Speakers will include the Freedom Center’s president and COO, Woodrow Keown Jr.; U.S. Rep. Greg Landsman (OH-01); and Alicia Reece, the president of the Hamilton County Commissioners.

After the ceremony, The Beacon of Hope will be on display until April 30. The statue portrays a determined Tubman stepping over the yoke of slavery. Both broken and unbroken shackles lay at her feet to represent those she helped free and those not yet free. In her right hand, reaching up to the sky, is the North Star, the symbolic guide to freedom. The Freedom Center hope those who see the statue will find inspiration and courage to walk in Tubman’s footsteps.

The statue is on display in recognition of the Harriet Tubman commemorative coin, a series of collectible coins honoring her legacy. The coins come in three denominations, with each representing different points throughout Tubman’s life and can be purchased at the Freedom Center starting March 6 or online from the U.S. Mint.

A portion of proceeds from each coin sold will help support the missions of the Freedom Center and the Harriet Tubman Home in Auburn, New York.
