An out-of-town law enforcement officer who claimed to be with Immigration and Customs Enforcement visited multiple Cincinnati Public schools on April 15, according to the district.
The individual visited “a small number of our schools” to conduct wellness checks related to students believed to be enrolled in CPS, the district wrote in a social media post Wednesday evening.
The district said the officer only visited school offices and did not request to see or interact with any students and had “no direct contact with students.”
CPS did not say which schools the officer visited.
District leadership said they contacted the officer and directed that any future inquiries regarding CPS students be handled through its Office of General Council.
“The safety of our students and staff is our top priority. We remain committed to maintaining safe, supportive and welcoming school environments for every child and family we serve,” the district said in a statement. “We have also reinforced the district’s protocols for responding to law enforcement with school staff.”
CPS is the region’s largest school district. It serves around 35,000 students spread across more than 60 schools.
