Cincinnati World Cinema at the Garfield Theatre and the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) are teaming up this Saturday for a Queen City-focused music documentary double feature.
As part of the Society for American Music’s Sounding the Nation at 250 initiative, the theatre will host “Cincinnati Sounds Presents,” which will screen two locally made documentaries explaining our region’s musical history. Both filmmakers will be present for Q&A discussions after each film, along with distinguished speakers from the local music scene.
First up, “Cincinnati Sounds: Exploring a Musical City’s Spaces, Places, and Sounds” by CCM’s Melissa Godoy is a brief, 25-minute-long compendium of the sounds that give Cincinnati its unique character, sharing the roots and evolution that connect us all.
After that, the theatre will screen the feature-length director’s cut of “King of Them All: The Story of King Records” by Yemi Oyediran. Previously screened on PBS in a shorter cut, it details the history of King Records and its founder, Syd Nathan, whose multi-racial melting pot became an epicenter of American music. King Records fostered the creation and distribution of blues, country, R&B, gospel and rock-n-roll, of local and national significance.
Screenings will take place at 3:30 and 7 p.m. on Saturday downtown at the Garfield Theatre.
