At the 98th Academy Awards this Sunday, three Ohioans—two with ties to Cincinnati—are up for cinema’s biggest prize.
Hannah Beachler, who grew up in Centerville and attended the University of Cincinnati for fashion design, was nominated for Best Production Design for her work on Ryan Coogler’s smash-hit horror-drama “Sinners”—which received 16 nominations, the most of any film this year.
Beachler previously won an Oscar for working on 2019’s “Black Panther,” another one of Coogler’s films, which made her the first African American woman to win for production design.
“We are incredibly proud to see Hannah recognized once again at the highest level,” Film Cincinnati President and CEO Kristen Schlotman said in a statement. “Her work continues to inspire filmmakers across our region and demonstrates the lasting impact of the talent that has built their careers here.”
Bryce Dessner, acclaimed music producer and frontman of the Grammy-winning Cincinnati-based band The National, was nominated for his first Oscar this year. Netflix’s early-1900s period drama “Train Dreams” features a song of the same name by Dessner that was nominated for Best Original Song.
In addition, short film “The Singers”—which was produced by Eaton, Ohio resident Jack Piatt and showcased at the Cindependent Film Festival—was nominated for Best Live Action Short Film.
