University of Cincinnati’s College of Conservatory of Music is offering preparatory workshops in the arts for high school students this summer.
CCM Preparatory and Community Engagement’s High School Arts Immersion program will begin in June and is intended for incoming sophomores through rising seniors. Some programs for fourth through ninth graders are available.
The summer programs are focused in ballet, potential music majors, jazz performance, music composition and musical theater. Depending on the program, students will participate in-person, virtually or via a hybrid format.
According to program organizers, students throughout the country will learn from national artists and teachers, including those in CCM’s collegiate faculty members.
The ballet workshop will feature two-week program from June 7-11 and July 12-16. Students between the ages of 14 and 18 are eligible; the workshop is appropriate for intermediate through advanced dancers.
The program will feature daily and evening classes at a ballet facility. Students will specialize in “ballet technique, pointe, battiere, pas de deux, ballet repertoire, ballet variations and modern dance,” the workshop’s program page says. Students can also take classes in hip-hop, jazz, Pilates and character dance. Instruction on injury prevention and nutrition will also be provided.
Tuition for the ballet workshop costs $500 per week.
The CCM/Cincinnati Public Schools Summer Jazz Academy is available for students from 4th to 12th grade from June 14-18.
The program’s page says that “daily classes will include jazz ensembles, jazz history, jazz theory, jazz improvisation as well as jazz arranging and college audition preparation for high school students.”
Students will be separated into groups and will be taught by jazz performers and educators from CCM, CPS and the Greater Cincinnati region. The program concludes with a performance by all the student groups.

No auditions are required, but students must have at least one year of experience on an instrument. Tuition for the Jazz Academy costs $150.
The band program will be offered from June 7-11 for students interested in pursuing a music major in college. This workshop is intended for incoming freshmen through seniors in high school who have experience with any of the following instruments: flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, sax, french horn, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, tuba or percussion.
The program will teach the fundamentals on college auditions, career exploration, music theory and scholarship tips. Students will meet with CCM faculty and current students in addition to rehearsing in large and small settings at CCM’s facility.
No audition for enrollment is required. Placement auditions will take place on Sunday, June 6.
Tuition for the band program is $275. Private lessons are available for an additional fee.
The emerging composers program will be a virtual workshop from August 1-6 for incoming freshmen and seniors who are interested in composing music.
The workshop features individual lessons with CMM’s faculty as well as daily courses on orchestration and music theory. The importance of mental and physical wellness for musicians will also be taught. The conclusion of each day will feature a presentation on a variety of topics, from electronic composition techniques to musical collaboration with visual artists, by key guest speakers.
At the culmination of the workshop, each participant will have their original piano composition performed by one of CCM’s piano soloists in a live-streamed event. The composition will be recorded for portfolio use.
Tuition for the composition program is $600.
The musical theater program will be a virtual workshop on selected dates for rising sophomores and seniors. The workshop sessions will take place on June 15, 22 and 24 and July 1 and 6.
Online synchronous classes will feature instruction on vocal and acting techniques. Each morning session will be vocal training and each evening session will have monologue coaching. Special sessions will spotlight Broadway professionals who are CCM alumni. In addition, there will be pre-recorded classes that are available for viewing at every student’s discretion and pace.
Auditions for enrollment are not required. For the full program, tuition is $600. If a student is not able to attend every session, tuition is $125 per day.
