Well-known Queen City mixologist Molly Wellmann has announced she will be moving on to a new chapter in her life — which includes selling her Over-the-Rhine bar.
Japp’s Since 1879 is a beloved cocktail bar that Wellmann has owned since 2010. Starting July 11, the bar's ownership will be in the hands of Four Entertainment Group (4EG), per a release from the group.
4EG currently owns and operates many Cincinnati establishments including Igby’s, The Lackman, Rosedale, Keystone Bar & Grill, The Stretch and more. 4EG’s managing partner Bob Deck said in the release that they hope to “ensure a seamless transition” as they take over ownership of Japp's.
German immigrant John G. Japp founded a wig company in the building which currently houses the bar in 1879. Since 2010, the spot has served up cocktails “prominent in 1700 to 1950s history," per the release.
“The time has come to move on to my next chapter in life. For the last twelve years, I have been proud to own many amazing bars in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky,” said Wellmann in a statement. She says she will be sharing her knowledge of cocktails through private classes, events and possibly even writing a book.
Deck says that not much will change with Japp's — they plan on keeping all the current staff plus continuing the current schedule of events and live music. “Molly is a longtime friend of mine and an icon in the Greater Cincinnati bar and restaurant industry. We’re ecstatic she has entrusted us to keep the Japp’s brand alive through high-quality cocktails and historical storytelling.”
Wellmann says she is excited about her new plans and for the future of Japp’s. “This is a great change and I’m thrilled that Japp’s will continue on as a Cincinnati staple that makes our city so wonderful!”
