Who knew it was almost National Grilled Cheese Day?? The melty national holiday is apparently right around the corner, and the city’s favorite Cincinnati-spawned grilled cheese chain is celebrating by giving away free grilled cheese donuts with the purchase of any handcrafted melt.
The reality is, National Grilled Cheese Day actually falls annually on April 12 — Easter Sunday this year — but the restaurant says that out of respect for its guest and employees, it’s pushing the celebration back a day to Monday, April 13…with the approval of the Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin.
The special applies to all carry-out and curbside pick-up orders and both can be placed online at tomandchee.com/order.
“National Grilled Cheese Day is one of our favorite days of the year, and one we always look forward to celebrating as a company with our fans,” said Tom & Chee President and CEO Roger David in a release. “I’m an over-protective dad — ask my kids and they’ll agree — but we’ve been going above and beyond standard cleanliness/sanitization guidelines, as well as CDC recommendations. We must always ensure the safety of our staff and guests to feed our communities throughout this crisis.”
“This year, things look a little different, but we felt it’s still important to share a delicious treat with guests. The grilled cheese donut, a perfect combination of savory and sweet, is what really put Tom & Chee on the map,” David continued. “If you’ve tried it, you know it’s a perfect combo. If you haven’t tried it, this is a great day to do it.”
Tom & Chee also shared some interesting facts about the origin of the melted favorite — fun trivia for any true grilled cheese fan: “With origins dating back as far as the Roman Empire based on ancient cookbooks, the grilled cheese sandwich became a phenomenon in America in the early 20th century out of necessity. After James L. Kraft patented processed cheese in the mid 1910s, the Great Depression prompted many to find a meal that was fit for both their palates and their budgets — making the grilled cheese sandwich a staple of many American households.”
Tom & Chee has three locations offering carry-out and curbside during the COVID-19 pandemic:
- 125 E. Court St., Downtown
- 9328 Union Centre Blvd., West Chester
- 7578 Beechmont Ave., Anderson
