Taft’s Brewing Company says it has made the decision to close its flagship location, Taft’s Ale House, in Over-the-Rhine after eight years in operation. Its final day will be Saturday, Nov. 25.

The brewery says the pandemic, a decline in tourism and the increase in the cost of goods contributed greatly to its decision to close, but owners say, ultimately, Taft’s could not compensate for a significant loss in sales since COVID began.

“Ownership has self-sustained daily operations of Taft’s Ale House for the past couple of years, and it is clear that our current business model is unable to financially support the location. Our main concern right now is our Ale House team and assisting with future employment however possible,” Taft’s ownership team said in a press release. “At the core of Taft’s Ale House has always been their incredible team. Their hard work, commitment and cheer brought to the Ale House and OTR will be greatly missed.”

Taft’s Ale House employees were given advance notice of the closure and will be given severance, according to the owners. They’re also offering employment opportunities at their Brewpourium locations and contract beverage business, as well as reaching out to other Over-the-Rhine businesses for current openings.

“We wish our neighbors, OTR community and most importantly, our incredible team the very best,” said ownership. “Prior to the closing, please stop in and enjoy a pint with them at the Ale House (1429 Race St.), as Taft’s gives a final heartfelt goodbye.”

Taft’s Brewpourium in Cincinnati and Columbus will continue to operate as normal.
