Admittedly, this summer — and really, year — has been downright weird in the streaming world, especially for Netflix. According to CNBC, the streaming giant's shares were down 10 percent, as cited in the company's second-quarter earnings report. There was also a loss in both U.S. and international subscribers.
That announcement comes with much change on the horizon: Disney will launch their own streaming platform Nov. 12, effectively pulling their content from competitors, including Netflix. Ol' Mickey Mouse also bought full control of rival Hulu in May, edging out Comcast — who owns NBCUniversal — as a stakeholder. Don't fret: Part of the deal included Hulu keeping NBC shows, like Saturday Night Live and The Office, for at least five years.
NBCUniversal is also edging into the streaming market in April of next year. That move means The Office will leave Netflix in early 2020 — signifying the loss of one of their most-streamed shows. It will also lose another highly-trafficked sitcom: Friends, which will move to WarnerMedia's HBO Max. So, binge-watchers, watch 'em while you can. Plus, diehard-Mac users can look forward to the debut of Apple TV Plus this autumn.
It's safe to say that the already crowded streaming universe is about to get way tighter. Despite the looming shakeups, there's still a slew of new content coming to Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime — the established trio — in August.
