Artful Cincinnati-based Indie Pop troupe WHY? has released a fantastic new EP and short film. The three-track I: I may come out a broken yolk, I may come out on saddle. is Yoni Wolf and Co.’s first new music since 2017’s Moh Lhean and follows a 2018 live album recorded at Jack White’s Third Man Records complex.
The EP was released in conjunction with a seven-minute short film directed by award-winning filmmaker Miles Joris-Peyrafitte and starring Wolf and Orphan Black actress Tatiana Maslany. The film also features what appear to be childhood home movies of Wolf and his bandmate/brother Josiah spliced over the track “Peel Free,” the reflective centerpiece of broken yolk that ranks right up there with some of WHY?’s best material. On it Wolf sings, “I was born inflamed/Shot face-first out the cocked eye of a hurricane/And today, still, some of that storm surrounds me.“
WHY? will be embarking on a cross-continental tour this summer, beginning in Indianapolis on Aug. 14 and wrapping up in Chicago on Sept. 22 (no Cincinnati dates are currently on the itinerary). The band toured extensively last year in celebration of its classic album Alopecia’s 10th anniversary.
I may come out a broken yolk is streaming now on Spotify.
