When one organizes an exhibition of art centered on the theme of gender roles, astute art-goers might be reluctant to buy into such a broad-based subject. To say that there is an overarching theme common to all female artists is shortsighted to say the least. (How odd would it be if galleries put together a show titled “men’s work?”) The unfortunate circumstance is that many art institutions exhibit the work of male artists much more often than their female counterparts — regardless of the quality of their work. So Malton Gallery’s upcoming exhibition opening for Women’s Work, Art of Women, which includes a discussion by the participants, should make for an interesting evening — if only to find out just what one means when one says “women’s work.”
