A glitch in a computer program caused Cincinnati Public Schools to send out some students’ personal information to parents of 7,000 of the district’s bus riders, CPS says.
The emails sent yesterday were supposed to be reminders to parents to check their students’ bus route information before school starts Aug. 19. That information was included in the email — but so were the names, bus routes and schools of some students. Some parents received those emails multiple times.
“Earlier today, CPS sent e-mails to 7,000 yellow bus riders,” a statement from the district says. “An error occurred that resulted in some families receiving the students’ name, school, and bus pick-up and drop-off information. We regret the error.”
The district’s information technology team has created a fix for the glitch, according to CPS. School officials do not believe the incident was the result of a data breach or hack from outside the district. The district says it will provide updates to families whose information was included as soon as possible.
