“Comedy to me is true,” says stand-up comic Vince Morris when asked about what makes him laugh. “It’s what I can relate to or something that someone is being honest about,” he says. “If you’re being honest about what you’re talking about, and it comes from the heart, then that makes me laugh. When I watch other people, to me, that’s what true stand-up is.”
The Columbus native now lives in Los Angeles, but he still misses the Buckeye State. “I miss it in the sense of Midwestern values,” he says. “Everybody’s nice and friendly. They say, ‘Hello, how are you?’ If you put your blinker on on the freeway someone will move over before you have to try and muscle your way in. People are more down to earth here.” But his chosen career does have its advantages. “What other job can you do where you can actually tell people how you think about life?” he asks. “Then make them laugh about it and think about it and get paid. You can’t do that in any other line of you work … at a corporation you can’t walk in and say ‘I think this government is X, Y and Z, the war is this.’ You can’t do that.” Morris performs Thursday-Sunday at Go Bananas in Montgomery.
