Cincinnati’s Flying Pig Marathon is adding two new race divisions, expanding access to the iconic marathon race to athletes with physical disabilities.
Participants in this year’s race, which takes place May 5-7, can now sign up for a 10K handcycle division or a para athlete division.
According to a press release from Flying Pig organizers, the 10K handcycle division will allow athletes to participate in the 10k with specially-designed bicycles powered by the user’s arms rather than their legs.
The para athlete division will include a 5K, 10K, and full and half marathons. The top three male and female competitors from the handcycle and para athlete divisions will be recognized with awards. “We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to participate, and we are excited to provide that opportunity to handcycle athletes and para athletes. We hope that these new divisions will inspire more people to get involved in our race experiences while making the Flying Pig Marathon Weekend even more diverse, inclusive and accessible,” said Iris Simpson Bush, CEO of the Flying Pig Marathon.
Athletes interested in participating in the new 10K handcycle and para athlete divisions can sign up by emailing registration@flyingpigmarathon.com.
