The ever-busy Greenhornes bring their current tour with San Antonio rockers Hacienda (“discovered” by Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys and also the bulk of Auerbach’s solo touring band, The Fast Five) to Covington’s Mad Hatter Thursday night for an all-ages, 8 p.m. show. (Local openers are The Kickaways and Two Headed Dog, featuring former members of The Virgins and Thee Shams.) If you can’t make it or want to keep the Greenhorne vibe going into April Fool’s Day, you can catch the band performing on Carson Daly’s late-night NBC show Friday (yes, it’s still on the air and, in fact, actually features a number of interesting musical and cultural figures now that the network appears to have no interest in it).—-
Daly’s Last Call will air footage from The Greenhornes’ recent visit to the South By Southwest festival. The same episode also includes segments with Ted Leo and Charles Bradley & Menahan Street Band. The program airs locally on WLWT Channel 5 at 1:36 a.m.
The band appears to be continuing its comeback run for the foreseeable future (Jack White must be too busy with his label and other projects to “borrow” their rhythm section again). The Greenhornes just announced an appearance at the big Sled Island music fest in Calgary this June alongside Blonde Redhead, The Buzzcocks, The Dandy Warhols and of Montreal. In May, the band tours North America with buzzing newcomers JEFF the Brotherhood; a split 7-inch single featuring both bands is being issued on JEFF’s Infinity Cat Records and sold exclusively on the tour jaunt (closest local stop appears to be Memphis).
The Greenhornes continue to draw positive press; besides glowing newspaper write-ups in practically every city the band visits on tour, the group was also featured in American Songwriter magazine recently (check out the article here) .
Below is an excellent live video from the band’s global tour for its latest album, ****. It’s a clip (from Granted Productions) of the band performing James Brown’s “I’ll Go Crazy” at The Troubadour in Los Angeles. The song was the lead-off track on Brown’s legendary Live at the Apollo album, released by Cincinnati-based King Records in 1963, and has been covered by The Rolling Stones, Buddy Guy, Chris Isaak and many others.
