Just a couple years ago, the four members of Hippo Campus were in (or had just graduated from) Saint Paul Conservatory for the Arts, a high school in their native Minnesota. Almost immediately, the group attracted major buzz, first in its hometown and then among critics and music fans in the U.S. and U.K. But the quartet’s quick rise wasn’t due to marketing-campaign hype or an accidental viral video. The attention earned by Hippo Campus seems solely based on its spirited live presence and charismatic, guitar-driven Indie Pop/Rock, which is ear-worm melodic, rhythmically alluring and impressively sophisticated.
