You want something frothy this weekend? Check out Thoroughly Modern Millie at the Showboat Majestic or Much Ado About Nothing at Cincinnati Shakespeare (read Julie York Coppens’ review here). The latter is especially fun if you’re a Baby Boomer — it’s set in 1968 and has a soundtrack from the era.—-
If you prefer something that will set your hair on fire, head to the Cincinnati Playhouse to see High, a serious drama featuring movie star Kathleen Turner. It’s about downer topics like drug addiction and worse, and it’s told with tough language and graphic detail. (Check out my review here.)
But in my book, the most satisfying production currently onstage is Donald Margulies’ Collected Stories at Ensemble Theatre, an exploration of a relationship between two writers, one a veteran and one an eager student, that goes in unexpected directions. The production features two of Cincinnati’s best local professionals, Amy Warner and Corinne Mohlenhoff. It’s running for just one more week, but there are still chances for tickets, especially for Saturday matinees. You won’t be disappointed by this one. (Read my full review here.)
