Photographer Garry Winogrand’s Women Are Beautiful appeared as a book in 1975, and in 1981 Winogrand produced a portfolio of 85 prints selected from those works. Eighty of the portfolio prints are being shown at CAM.
This cohesive show expores his work in a narrow, thematic way. Women were an obsession and the time period he’s shooting in reveals the second wave of feminism. To pin him down as a feminist, a misogynist or an adorer of women would be hard.
The prints are crowded into the single Vince Waddell gallery in a deliberately tight hanging display that reveals the voyeuristic nature of his photographs. Through Aug. 23.
