HOT: Modern Band-Ridicule Protocol
It appears the pranksters behind the “Limp Bizkit to play secret Dayton gas station gig” hoax that took the world by storm last month are pioneers of a new viral internet fad we’ll all soon forget (like planking or Tebowing). There’s now a Facebook event/campaign to have Smash Mouth perform at a dilapidated, abandoned hotel in Miami, Fla. As the trend dictates, the “organizer” is giving straight-faced interviews insisting Smash Mouth is, as the FB description says, “one of the greatest bands of this generation.” The event description ends on a practical note: “We’ll settle for Crazytown.”
Perhaps this guy can play if Smash Mouth won’t:
WARM: Title Fight
An 80-year-old British comic/TV personality decided to cash in on his appearance on the British version of The Voice early this year. Though Bernie Clifton failed his Voice audition, he decided to record some of his favorite songs for eager fans. But when he received his 1,000 CDs, he was reportedly “furious.” On the back cover, instead of “Danny Boy” and “Wind Beneath My Wings,” the track listing featured titles like “Odious,” “Glaciate the Servants” and other tracks from an album by London Death Metal band Abhorrent Decimation. Things could have been worse when you consider there are Death Metal songs titled “I Cum Blood” and “Testicular Manslaughter.”
Not Death Metal:
COLD: Zappa Family Feud
For years, Dweezil Zappa, son of Rock legend Frank Zappa, has helmed successful tours playing his father’s music. He calls the project Zappa Plays Zappa,
because, well, that’s exactly what it is. But now, Dweezil is being forced to change the
name after being told that Zappa Plays
Zappa is a trademark violation. The notice came from the Zappa Family Trust, which is run by Dweezil’s older brother, Ahmet. Dweezil was reportedly told that if he kept
the name, he’d have to pay $150,000 per song performed each night of the tour. The musician says he will change the name of the project to the clunky “Dweezil Zappa Plays Frank Zappa,” and not, unfortunately, “Ahmet is a Big Stupid Poopy Head.”
Perhaps all Ahmet really wants is to get this band back together:
