ArtWorks is calling artists ages 14-21 to apply for paid apprenticeships working under seasoned artists on public art projects this fall.
Applicants can choose to apply for one of five public murals to work on in Avondale, Bond Hill, Walnut Hills, the Pendleton neighborhood of Over-the-Rhine or a mural that will adorn an ArtWorks van. The projects aim to transform ordinary places around Cincinnati into “extraordinary visual experiences.”
The deadline for applying is Aug. 1. Each job begins Aug. 29 and goes through October. Artists will be paid $12.45 per hour at 20 hours per week, according to an ArtWorks press release. Artists will also gain experience, skills and resume-building opportunities. These select apprentices will earn comprehensive career readiness training, the release says.
“ArtWorks believes in the value of investing in the next generation of diverse young talent across the region … the young artists will learn firsthand from accomplished mentoring artists, gain invaluable insights, expand their skill set and build their resume and portfolio,” the press release states.
ArtWorks CEO and Artistic Director Colleen Houston says the apprenticeship could be a career-impacting opportunity.
“Working as an apprentice within the ArtWorks Cincinnati program is an extraordinary opportunity for young artists to unlock their true potential. It’s a transformative experience that fosters growth, creativity and invaluable mentorship, paving the way for a promising future in the world of art or any desired career path,” Houston said in the press release. “Above and beyond a paycheck, this is such a rewarding job experience – to be part of a collaborative team effort and make a positive difference in the community.”
Apprentices selected for the Cuban Cultural Mural in Pendleton will paint a mural designed by the chief curator and executive director of the Museum of Contemporary Art of the Americas, Jorge Rodriguez Diez. The Cuban illustrator and museum director created a piece that uses pop and vintage illustrations to provoke questions about Cuba’s past while making connections to current events.
Van mural select apprentices will be given the opportunity to beautify ArtWorks’ first-ever work van with artwork that represents the nonprofit’s commitment to bringing art to every corner of Cincinnati.
“This endeavor serves a dual purpose: not only will it enable ArtWorks to extend the reach of our artistic endeavors and enhance communities across the wider Cincinnati region, but it will also serve as a vibrant testament to the incredible talent thriving within our local artist community,” according to the ArtWorks press release.
In addition to the Fall Apprenticeship Program, ArtWorks is also accepting applications for its master-class series, which selects groups of eight to 10 artists ages 16-24 to join free classes led by local and national artists. ArtWorks invites artists to lead the programs at its V² Gallery that correspond to upcoming exhibitions. Teachers will demonstrate technique and coach participants in artmaking methods, according to the press release.
