The annual City of Montgomery Independence Day Parade is still on for this year’s Fourth of July celebration. But in order to prevent closely quartered crowds anxious to view the procession, the city is shaking it up by having a “reverse” parade.
No. It’s not cars and floats driving backward.
Roughly 50 of the floats, creations and vehicles that were slated to be in the parade this year will instead be stationed in the Sycamore High School parking lot, where viewers can loop around in their cars and take a look. Spectators can drive by the reverse parade starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 4.
The novel idea caught the attention of NPR, who ran a story on the unique concept June 30.
The decision for the annual parade to continue safely in a new format after a city-wide survey showed participants were willing to have their attractions be stationary. The reverse parade will keep crowds from congregating too closely, as the coronavirus remains a prevalent threat in communities across the state and the country.
