Learning Through Art Inc., in partnership with the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, will welcome Little Amal to Cincinnati — a 12-foot puppet representing a lost 10-year-old Syrian refugee, who travels the world in search of refuge and family.
Learning Through Art (LTA) will feature the Story Quilts: Community Conversation and Workshop during the Night Market on July 29 from 4-7 p.m. at Findlay Market. Attendees will come together to create their own quilt square that will eventually be sewn together for Little Amal’s rest at the Freedom Center. Little Amal will be covered by the quilt after her inspiring walk across the Roebling Suspension Bridge on Sept. 22.
“The opportunity to invite neighbors to share their stories surrounding the topics of displacement, migration, compassion, and hope, through the activity of creating story quilt squares following an LTA-led, community discussion, much like our Story Quilts project, at Findlay Market, is complete synergy,” said Kathy Wade, CEO and co-founder of LTA.
After Little Amal’s stay at the Freedom Center, the quilt will then be donated to Findlay Market for a permanent display in honor of the support of the community’s collaboration and creativity. The display is meant to spark proactive and positive conversations and discussions within the community.
Olive Tree Catering, a Syrian-Middle Eastern catering company located at Findlay Kitchen, will also make an appearance for the evening workshop, offering food for purchase while the community creates the quilt.
Admission to this event is free. To learn more about Little Amal, visit walkwithamal.org. To learn more about the quilting event, visit learningthroughart.com.
