You might have to be more willing to go with the flow and plan ahead if you’re flying out of CVG International Airport soon. A new report from Forbes Advisor says the airport is one of the worst for summer travel.
Out of the U.S.’s 100 busiest airports, CVG ranked as the sixth-worst for summer travel, coming behind Bradley International Airport in Hartford, Connecticut; Orlando International Airport; Asheville Regional Airport; St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport; and Orlando Sanford International Airport. To figure out the rankings, Forbes Advisor looked at two main categories: on-time arrival performance and airfare price during the summer travel season.
On-time arrival metrics counted the heaviest for the overall score with 85 total points possible (the higher the score, the worse an airport was ranked). Metrics included percentages of canceled flights, on-time arrivals, late-arriving aircraft delays and national aviation system delays, among other factors. Airfare pricing took up the remaining 15 points, looking at average cost in Q2 (April to June), average dollar change in airfare price between Q1 (January to March) and Q2 and average percent change in price between Q1 and Q2.
This data was taken from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics TranStats database. Forbes Advisor calculated the five-year average using data between 2018-2022 for each scoring factor. For airport performance-related metrics, they used only data from June-August.
According to the data, CVG scored a total of 89.01 points, with a little over 75% of its flights arriving on time and having canceled nearly 2% of its flights throughout the measured time. Its percentages of national aviation system delays and delays from late-arriving aircraft were 5.68% and 8.85%, respectively.
Rounding out the top 10 worst airports for summer travel in the report were Dallas Love Field Airport, Colorado Springs Airport, McGhee Tyson Airport in Knoxville, Tennessee; and El Paso International Airport.

It’s not all bad news out of CVG, however: The airport earlier this month launched a direct flight to London on British Airways and just announced American Airlines will start offering a direct flight to Cancun at the end of this year. They also recently opened a Braxton Brewing taproom in Concourse A, so if your flight does get delayed, at least you can enjoy some of Northern Kentucky’s finest beer while you wait.
