Scarecrows: Mildly (or definitely, depending on how you feel about stuffed straw men) freaky dummies erected in an attempt to frighten animals from fields so they don’t eat crops. Also: comic book villains, classic fall decor and horror harbingers in haunted houses/haunted hayrides/haunted whatever where there’s secretly actual humans underneath ready to murder you.
End result: Regardless of what they’re used for, even if they’re supposed to be quaint, scarecrows are unsettling.
Which is why a trip to Fairfield County, Ohio’s Trail of Scarecrows is an excellent COVID-friendly road trip idea. Kind of scary, kind of cute, definitely autumnal.
Located just outside of Columbus, this county-wide trail is back for its second year. The trail and contest features more than 275 homemade scarecrows erected in yards, in front of businesses and on the street across 14 different communities.
Viewers can traverse all 14 and then vote for their favorite creation for a People’s Choice Award. (Vote here.) The winner gets a $50 gift card and “bragging rights as the best scarecrow in the Scarecrow Capital of Ohio.”
