The summer heat might still be lingering, but the fall Classical music season is already providing a tang in the air. As always, the Cincinnati Symphony and Pops orchestras are leading the procession with some spectacular programs to close out the calendar year and begin their 2006-07 seasons at Music Hall. The CSO kicks off its season with an all-Brahms program on Sept. 15 and 16, conducted by Maestro Paavo Jarvi and featuring renowned violinist Gil Shaham performing the “Violin Concerto in D Minor.” Maestro Jarvi also conducts the remaining September programs featuring works by Mozart, Schumann and Tubin, joined by bassoonist William Winstead (Sept. 22-23) and cellist Truls Mork (Sept. 29-30). October’s programs will offer a variety of guest conductors, including James DePriest (Oct. 6-7), Andrey Boreyko (joined by violin superstar Hilary Hahn, Oct. 13-14) and assistant conductor Robert Porco (Oct. 27-28) directing the CSO’s performances of works by Mendelssohn, Chopin, Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, Britten and Schubert. Maestro Jarvi returns in November to conduct Bernstein’s “Slava!” (Nov. 3-4) and an all-orchestral program of Messiaen’s “L’ Ascension” and Mahler’s “Symphony No. 9 in D Major” (Nov. 10-11). The CSO’s 2006 season closes with guest conductors Gianandrea Noseda (Nov. 16 and 18, with pianist Leon McCawley) and Kwame Ryan (Dec. 2-3, with percussionist Colin Currie).

The Pops opens its season next weekend (Sept. 8-10) with “The Essential Sinatra,” as maestro Erich Kunzel conducts a program featuring the Chairman’s signature tunes as interpreted by local vocalist Jefferey Berger and featuring Lindy Hop dancers Steven Bailey and Nathalie Gomes and Latin/Ballroom steppers Alex Lazo and Co. Maestro Kunzel and the Pops offer a tribute to Hollywood with “Go to the Movies” (Oct. 20-22), renowned composer/conductor Marvin Hamlisch returns to lead the Pops through his hits for a pair of performances (Nov. 12 and 19) and the great-grandchildren of Georg and Maria Von Trapp, whose family drama was portrayed in The Sound of Music, will join Kunzel and the Pops for a special holiday program (Dec. 8-10).

The Chamber Music Network of Greater Cincinnati will sponsor “Chamber Palooza!,” the first ever Chamber music festival on Sept. 9 at the Cincinnati Art Museum’s Great Hall and Miro Hall. Featured performers include the Azmari Quartet, the Cincinnati Klezmer Duo, Apollo’s Cabinet, Conundrum with pianist Phil Amalong, among many others.
