On a national level, 2016 has been a wild, at times terrifying ride through America’s darker corners. The GOP presidential nomination went to Donald Trump, a former reality TV star who deals in xenophobia, racism and sexism. The Democratic Party’s process, which chose former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, was rife with party infighting and sniping at populist candidate U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders. All around, not a good look for our democracy. On a local level, politicians have had to deal with that fallout, and some have done a better job than others.
Despite the dark cast this year has taken, there are rays of hope. Read on to get our recommendations for the local, state and national leaders we believe are prepared to navigate us beyond the acrimony and division 2016 has wrought.
