On Oct. 27, more than 100 Ohio craft breweries will be joining together to offer a limited-edition, specially designed “can” glass to celebrate Ohio Pint Day and National American Beer Day.

The glass, designed by Columbus-based artist Adam Hernandez, features the state bird — the cardinal — and was inspired by the theme “#InThisTogetherOhio.”

“For this piece, I chose to depict Ohio’s state bird, the cardinal, as a phoenix,” Hernandez says in his artist’s statement. “The phoenix is a powerful creature that represents transformation and rebirth… My goal is that when the community sees the Cardinal Phoenix they will be challenged to look inward and see how they too can be transformed.”

The choice to put the design on a 16-ounce can glass also has meaning in and of itself. According to the Ohio Craft Brewers Association — the nonprofit organizing the event — the commemorative cup’s size and shape was “chosen in part to reflect the craft beer industry’s emergency pivot to canned beer in 2020 necessitated by the response to the coronavirus pandemic.”

Each brewery is allowed to select their own special way to handle the glass promotion: Some may offer it at the brewery, filled with a certain brew, or with to-go orders, or as an individual sale.

The promo is also a fundraiser for the OCBA, which “serves to promote, protect and unify Ohio’s craft brewing industry.”

“As challenging as 2020 has been for our organization, it has been even more of a challenge for Ohio breweries,” said OCBA executive director Mary MacDonald. “We’ve made it a point to make sure that our fundraisers this year can benefit the bottom lines of our breweries as well.”

Participating Greater Cincinnati breweries include:

If you have the Ohio On Tap brewery passport app, you can get an extra stamp if you purchase an Ohio Pint Day glass. According to the OCBA, “Users will be able to submit selfies with their glass from Oct. 27 through Nov. 1 to receive the stamp.”
