MadTree Brewing is set to open a multi-level Over-the-Rhine bar, restaurant and event space next week.
MadTree describes Alcove's main bar and restaurant as containing "a large bar, light-filled lounges, dining areas and an intimate private dining room for small groups." On the website, they also mention a greenhouse bar and a "lush outdoor patio space for lounging and dining."
The food and drink menus have yet to be announced, but the brewery has said the menu will be focused on farm-to-table dishes created by chef Stephen Williams of Bouquet Restaurant and Spoon: Kitchen and Market. The drink menu will feature housemade cocktails — utilizing herbs grown in that aforementioned greenhouse — and MadTree’s own brews will be on tap at the three bars located throughout.
From a design standpoint, Alcove is stuffed with live greenery from Urban Blooms in every corner, creating a secret-garden-like feeling with living feature walls. In the event loft on the third floor, there's even a massive chandelier made of ferns.
Designers also focused on integrating the rich history of the building into its design. Old photos and news clippings sit framed along the walls, telling a story of a building that has seen many lives since its construction in 1873.
Previously known as Weilert’s Café, a popular Over-the-Rhine biergarten, this historic building was home to many happenings of 19th-century Cincinnati life. For example, members of the original Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra played as the house band before the symphony's official formation. The front dining area was even home to a favorite booth of politician George “Boss” Cox.
The third-floor "Loft” event space is suited for up to 150 guests. It was once known as the Yokum Athletic Club, where it is thought Ezzard Charles trained. High ceilings, tall windows and light wooden floors make the space feel calm and earthy, especially against the living chandelier.
Reservations are available online now. Alcove is located at 1400-1410 Vine St. in Over-the-Rhine. Find more information at madtreebrewing.com/alcove.
