Northside will soon welcome a new addition to the neighborhood.

Gulow Street, a cozy yet sophisticated bar and restaurant located at the corner of Hoffner Street and Gulow — the establishment's namesake — is a family operation, owned by brothers/cousins Jonathan, Danny and Alex Mouch.

The trio built the business with hopes of providing an approachable hub where folks can "gather, socialize, create memories and strengthen community," Jonathan Mouch tells CityBeat

The historic building has served many purposes over the course of its life, originally housing a saloon and later a metal fabricating company and showroom. But Jonathan says the space sat vacant for a long time before his team began its most recent transformation.

The team designed the space to evoke a sense of comfort.

"My cousin and partner Danny Mouch repurposed old doors, tin ceilings, beadboard, lighting fixtures, etc. in the build-out to give the space a lived-in look," Jonathan says. "We made every effort to design and furnish the space more as you would a home rather than a commercial bar/kitchen."

Jonathan says they drew inspiration from their grandfather's logo design for his jewelry business in Carthage when designing their own logo — adding an deeper element of family to their endeavor.

Gulow Street's food menu is small but mighty, offering seven dishes ranging from breakfast to dinner, with stand-out items including sesame noodles, a pimento-stuffed breakfast sandwich, rigatoni bolognese and a cheeseburger.

The cocktail menu sports four craft cocktails ranging in spirits from bourbon and vodka to gin.

From 5-7 p.m. on weekdays, the bar will offer a happy hour menu with $4 Tito's Vodka, $2 Miller High-Life and $3 well drinks — and on Tuesdays folks can enjoy a burger and a draft brew for $10.

Jonathan says the menu will change seasonally, and they will aim to use local ingredients when possible.

"We’ll have some consistent menu items but are more excited to keep things interesting running nightly/weekly specials in many types of cuisine and flavor profiles," he says.

The Mouchs have dedicated a converted garage on the property for the bar/restaurant's patio space, and Jonathan says dogs are welcome in that space.

Gulow Street is slated to open late June. Follow their Facebook and Instagram for updates.
