From the looks of some recently posted photos on social media, Southwest Ohio native Greg Dulli appears to be cooking up something with The Afghan Whigs, the legendary AltRock band he co-founded in Cincinnati in the ’80s. But in the meantime, Dulli has given fans a little holiday treat very much in the moody, melancholic mode of his best music.
On Friday (Dec. 14), Dulli released a stark, haunted version of the chestnut “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” Today (Dec. 20), a great accompanying music video directed by Philip Harder was released, premiering this morning via Fader.
Dulli was inspired to cover the holiday classic due to his longstanding love for Judy Garland’s rendition, a piece of celluloid gold from 1944.
“I saw Meet Me In St. Louis as a child and this song just stayed with me forever,” Dulli said via press release. “It has a spectral quality that I always wanted to exaggerate.”
