To keep the fun of their annual music festival going, Northside’s The Comet is hosting a monthly music showcase featuring local talent across a variety of genres.

Burritofest spinoff Burrito Bites will be held the last Friday of the month August through October and feature five music acts, as well as plenty of burritos and booze. Like Burritofest, Burrito Bites will have a pay-what-you-can cover, and funds will go to performers to cover their production. All shows start at 8 p.m. and will go late, which also coincides with The Comet’s kitchen’s return of late hours.

Burrito Bites’ lineup includes:

Aug. 25: Just Punk

The inaugural Burrito Bites will feature good, old-fashioned punk rock with no frills and loud guitars. San Francisco punk band Shotwell will headline and be joined by four regional bands: surf punkers The Tangees, hardcore punk staple Fashion Kill, Dayton-based punks Good Soup and up-and-coming emo punk outfit Pickle Bucket.

Sept. 29: Oye: Contemporary Latin Showcase

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, September’s Burrito Bites will feature local musicians of Hispanic heritage across a variety of genres. Quena Mora, a local scene legend hailing from Puerto Rico, and his band will headline the show with his blend of Latin, soul and hip-hop. Aaron Magical, frontman of psych-rock band Lemon Sky; Max Vignola of Moon Cruiser and Lipstick Fiction; Los Soft Bois, an ambient project featuring members of dream-pop band Soften; and King Demon of avant-garde outfit Honorable Demons will also perform.

Oct. 27: Halloween Hoedown

October’s Burrito Bites will feature a night of twang to kick off the spookiest weekend of the year. Bluegrass band My Brother’s Keeper will headline the show. Psychedelic southern rock outfit The Electric Indigo, femme-fronted folk punk band Run Rabbit Run, acoustic indie folk act The Lanterns and country folk singer Easy Mark will also take the stage. Halloween Hoedown will also host a costume contest and other Halloween-themed fun. Organizers say picture it like Spirit Halloween took over the Grand Ole Opry, and that’s the vibe they’re going for.
