Friday will be a lively evening of gallery receptions and openings at the contemporary art outpost at 424 Findlay St. in the West End. Joseph Winterhalter’s exhibition at Aisle Gallery, entitled Flowers of Romance, is complemented by Carl Solway Gallery’s three concurrent exhibitions: Judy Pfaff’s Constructed Paper, Jean Dubuffet’s The Hourloupe Cycle Graphics, and A Tribute to Merce Cunningham in His 90th Year. Winterhalter’s work is usually cunning in its brisk compression of architectural imagery and the plunging psychologies of self and place into paintings and drawings. The three exhibitions at Solway will show how each artist’s work has its own sense of movement. Pfaff’s huge works on paper are frenetic displays of the unstable connections between various colors, patterns and materials. Dubuffet’s Hourloupe period of work is characterized by densely compacted, patterned clusters of abstract forms that lead the eye.
