Cincinnati Police Department’s Homicide Unit is investigating after a person was shot dead by an officer during a foot pursuit in East Price Hill, according to CPD Chief Teresa Theetge.
What we know
Theetge held a press briefing on the shooting around 11:15 a.m. on Thursday. She said CPD officers responded to an apartment complex near the 2500 block of Warsaw Avenue around 10 a.m. Thursday with the department’s Fugitive Apprehension Squad for reports of a stolen vehicle. While approaching the vehicle, Theetge said four people inside the vehicle fled on foot, and at least one had a firearm. Officers then chased the suspects as they ran; that’s when one CPD officer fired their weapon toward the armed suspect, striking and killing him.
“One officer discharged his firearm towards the individual who had a firearm, struck that individual,” Theetge said during the press briefing. “That individual is deceased.”
Two other suspects were taken into custody and one remains at large. Theetge did not have information about the suspect’s description.
When asked if the suspect who was shot had been firing or aiming his weapon at officers, Theetge declined to answer, saying CPD’s Homicide Unit is gathering more information at the scene. An investigation is ongoing.
Theetge declined to provide ages for the suspects. CPD will hold another press conference about the case on Friday.
