Director David Wain’s Wet Hot American Summer (2001 but set in 1981) translates the swirling madness of human existence into a hilarious and surreal summer-camp film, where the biggest problem faced by Camp Firewood campers is the dread of going home at the end of the season without scoring a single kiss (or the casual threat that NASA’s plummeting Skylab will annihilate the camp). Featuring performances by Amy Poehler, Paul Rudd, Bradley Cooper and many more, the cult classic is screening at the Esquire in anticipation of the film’s prequel series premiering on Netflix Friday.
