People in New York City brag about the chance to see works by Shakespeare in free outdoor settings (this summer in Central Park it’s The Winter’s Tale and The Merchant of Venice). But thanks to our own Cincinnati Shakespeare Company, you don’t need to travel all the way to the East Coast to enjoy the Bard al fresco. This summer the busy group (Noel Coward’s Blithe Spirit is currently onstage at their downtown theater) is offering A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Hamlet at various parks throughout southwestern Ohio and northern Kentucky. These are reduced versions of these works that will eventually tour to area schools; the actors (often playing several roles) are members of Cincy Shakes’ “Young Company,” professionals in training. This week it’s Hamlet at Mt. Echo Park (Wednesday), Monroe Community Park (Thursday) and Colerain Park (Friday). If you prefer lighter fare, head for Eden Park (Saturday) for A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Seasongood Pavilion. Most performances are at 7 p.m. Bring a picnic and enjoy a wonderful, theatrical tradition.
