Although dodgeball, ping-pong, bobsledding and countless other obscure sporting events have already been tapped by Hollywood, there is at least one sole survivor that remains unexploited: broomball. Experience it in its organic form and witness the best of the best in action at the 2009 Broomball Championships at the U.S. Bank Ice Rink on Fountain Square. Without delving too deep into the 37-page rulebook, the game is played with two teams of six and the object is to strike a plastic ball (approximately the size of a grapefruit) with a broom into the opponent’s goal, much like hockey in concept, only without ice skates. After six weeks of fierce competition, the 36 teams that entered the 2009 HGC Championship Broomball Games will be narrowed down to four who will compete either in the “Abrasion Bowl,” the beginner’s conference, or the “Contusion Bowl,” for teams in the advanced conference. The event will be complete with the national anthem, a “Nerf rocket flyover,” between-game challenges, a giant scoreboard and trophy presentations. Games begin at 7 p.m. (Abrasion Bowl) and 7:30 p.m. (Contusion Bowl) Wednesday.
