Most business owners strive to create a safe environment for their customers to socialize, shop, relax, and enjoy their offerings. Being able to do this involves prioritizing building safety and hiring professional employees. Whether you own a restaurant, a bar, or a retail store for customers to shop ‘til they drop, you may be able to create a much safer space by doing the following things:

Enhance Natural Light

You can’t avoid what you can’t see. Customers can be at risk of tripping and falling if a business is poorly lit. If your building lacks natural light, enhance it with a skylight or install more lights. Not only do skylights and more lights get rid of dark corners, but they also make a business appear more attractive to shop, dine, or relax in.

Highlight or Fix Hazards

If your building has a hazard with the potential to harm employees and customers, highlight it so it’s easy to spot or fix it where possible. For example, rather than running an extension cable across the floor that can be a trip hazard, you might hire a local electrician to install an outlet closer to where you need it. For hazards that can’t be repaired, ensure they are clearly marked to prevent trips and falls.

Install Security Cameras

When hosting fun events, you want them to run smoothly, with everyone having a good time. While that generally happens, there’s always potential for things to go wrong. Fights can break out, businesses can get vandalized, and crimes can be committed.

These situations can be even more frustrating when the person or people responsible remain a mystery. That’s why installing security cameras can be a good idea. If something happens in or outside your business, you can review the footage to determine what occurred.

Improve Staff Training

In an ideal world, employees shouldn’t have to deal with challenging situations, like intoxicated patrons during a music event or bar fights after a sports game. However, that can be the reality. You may be able to improve the safety and security of your establishment and create a safer space for your patrons and employees by prioritizing staff training.

Provide programs on conflict resolution, de-escalation, and obtaining skills like managing emotions, responding to aggressive behaviors, and identifying triggers. The more your employees learn, the more confident they may feel to respond to challenging situations.

Provide Clean, Organized Spaces

Whether you own a bar, a restaurant, or a retail space, you want your customers to feel like they can navigate it effortlessly. If there are obstacles, they can be health and safety risks in many situations.

Always keep walkways and exits clear, and use floor markings to guide foot traffic. If there’s clutter with the potential to become trip hazards, purchase bins, cabinets, and shelves to keep stock and supplies off the floor. Where possible, implement a ‘place for everything’ system, so that employees won’t leave items in random places.

Your customers and employees deserve a safe environment in which to relax, work, and shop. If you’re ready to improve health and safety on your premises, start with these tips above.
