Got a kilt? Give it whirl during Celtic Fest, which unfolds Aug. 16-18 along The Banks, and you may land yourself a free SkyStar Observation ride. Raising the stakes even higher, lucky kilt-wearers will also snag a $5 gift card to the Holy Grail Tavern & Grille.
In case you missed the headline, there’s a catch: You have to be one of the first 25 men sporting a kilt to score a free ride. In a press release, Al Mers, owner/operator of the SkyStar Observation Wheel, said that they “look forward to having some free-spirited fun while celebrating our region’s Celtic heritage.” In an extra dose of festiveness, the SkyStar’s over-one-million LED lights will show off Celtic colors.
Men, in words of the very wise duo Seals & Croft, let that summer breeze make you feel fine. Wear a kilt. Just do it. For us.
The three-day event will celebrate Celtic heritage with traditional grub — Scotch eggs, fish and chips, shepherd’s pie, corned beef and cabbage — and live entertainment. Don’t have Celtic blood running through your veins? The event is open to folks of all ancestry. (According to the fest, the Celtic nations are Brittany, Cornwall, Wales, Scotland, Ireland and the Isle of Man.) A slew of quirky contests will be held, including Knobbiest Knees, Tallest Tale and a Haggis Toss. Plus, there will be a dart tournament and Highlighland Dance competition.
Naturally, the Irish whiskey (if you’re a Scot, that’s whisky) and beer will be a-flowing all night long.
5-11 p.m. Friday; noon-11 p.m. Saturday; noon-9 p.m. Sunday. Free admission. The Banks, Downtown, cincycelticfest.com.
