Step back in time to pioneer days this weekend with Great Parks’ 1800s Harvest Jamboree.

The Harvest Jamboree celebrates the pioneering history of the Cincinnati area with old-time food and games at Shawnee Lookout in Miami Township (Hamilton County). At the Harvest Jamboree, guests can taste recipes from the frontier, including onion pie, a savory dish made from shredded and fried onions in a pie shell, and corn pudding.

Along with the authentic flavors of the era, visitors can try their hand at tomahawk tossing, a stick and hoop rolling game, Jacob’s ladders and even take a spin on a pair of basic walking stilts. You can also take part in activities like candle-making, tin-crafting, plant-pounding and using a draw horse — a type of woodworking tool. Volunteers will also teach school lessons in the authentic 1800s Springhouse School, one of the major historic attractions at Shawnee Lookout.

Harvest Jamboree runs from 1-5 p.m. Saturday-Sunday, Nov. 8-9 and is free to attend, but some activities require a small fee (cash only). You also need a valid motor vehicle permit to enter the park.
