The city’s biggest film festival returns once again for its biggest year ever, which stretches across five days and two locations. But it’s kind of hard for it not to be their biggest, given the fact that the organization has acquired a theater, hosted a premiere for an eventual Academy Award winner and merged with another local film festival in the year’s worth of time since the last one. Cincinnati Reds vs. Chicago Cubs
Friday – Sunday, Great American Ballpark, downtown
If you want to torture yourself by watching the Cincinnati Reds sputter out into nothingness after yet another season of failure, that’s an option this weekend! At least there’s a strong chance that if you head to GABP this weekend you’ll get to see Elly de la Cruz do something really cool.
The Great Gatsby at the Aronoff
Friday – Sunday, Aronoff Center, downtown
It’s opening weekend here in Cincinnati for the musical adaptation of The Great Gatsby, which is currently touring the country after a successful, Tony-winning stint on Broadway. CityBeat spoke with lead actress Senzel Ahmady earlier this month, which you can read here.
Battle for the Victory Bell: Miami vs. UC
Saturday, 3:30 p.m., TQL Stadium, West End
A different sort of football will be played at TQL Stadium this weekend. One of college football’s most storied rivalries hits the West End this weekend when the University of Cincinnati takes on Miami during the Battle for the Victory Bell.
Saturday, 7:30 p.m., Music Hall, Over-the-Rhine
The Cincinnati Pops will perform the music of one of cinema’s most famous conductors this weekend. From “Pirates of the Caribbean” to “Interstellar” to “Dune,” attendees will relive some of the most epic moments from Hans Zimmer’s most enduring film scores.
Friday – Sunday, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Rouse Theatre, 962 Mt. Adams Circle Dr., Mt. Adams
This weekend marks the beginning of this year’s Playhouse in the Park season. Inspired by movies like “Ocean’s Eleven,” “Now You See Me” and “The Usual Suspects,” this theatrical caper is a high-tech mystery for the stage. Can you tell it’s a big weekend for theatre in Cincinnati? Cincy Shakes’ adaptation of “Network” continues this weekend, based on the classic film by Sidney Lumet and Paddy Chayefsky. We previewed this adaptation all the way back in March; check it out here.
Saturday, 10 a.m., Washington Park, Over-the-Rhine
You know the drill. City Flea is back, with vendors selling everything from vintage clothing to antiques to rare books all over Washington Park. Spend enough time wandering around and you’re sure to find something you like.
