Cincinnati Rock sensations Foxy Shazam kicked off 2020 by, basically, announcing their existence.
On Jan. 1, the band — which has an international following but hasn’t done anything since going on an unspecified hiatus in 2014 — posted on its relatively dormant social media pages images of “FS” buttons. The gesture kicked off a flurry of speculation within the excited Foxy Shazam fanbase.
Over the past few weeks, the teases came in the form of short video posts. One clip showed singer Eric Nally running around backstage and on stage at Cincinnati’s Taft Theatre, while yesterday (Feb. 10), a black and white video of Nally was posted with a simple caption: “Tomorrow.”
Now we know what the teasing has been all about. After exploring a variety of outside projects over the past six years, Foxy Shazam appears to be back and ready to rock once again.
The band will perform a hometown show at the Taft Theatre on April 11. Tickets ($29.50-$49.50) go on sale this Friday, Feb. 14 at 10 a.m. via ticketmaster.com.
In October 2014, during the touring cycle for 2014’s Gonzo (their first self-released effort since their 2005 debut, after stints on Sire and IRS), Foxy Shazam announced that it was canceling all of its scheduled tour dates. The band said the split would be for “an unknown amount of time” as the members spend some time with their families and other artistic endeavors. “We truly believe there is a future for Foxy Shazam, that our best art is yet to come,” the message continued. “We don’t know how long this will take but we plan on someday returning more powerful than ever.”
Since then, keyboardist Sky White has played with Cincinnati artists like Freekbass and J Dorsey and vocalist and horn player Alex Nauth has been working with his band The Skulx. Nally toured and recorded as a solo artist and enjoyed mainstream success with his collaborations with Macklemore.
Bassist Daisy Caplan has been touring constantly with his Post Punk duo with Kate Wakefield, Lung, in which he plays drums. He recently posted on Facebook that he would not be rejoining Foxy.
The band’s last Cincinnati show was at the Bunbury Music Festival in 2014.
At this time, it’s unclear if this is the beginning of a full-fledged comeback or just a one-off. We’ll update this post as more info becomes available.
