Widely acclaimed rootsy, rockin’ singer/songwriter/fiddler Amanda Shires will perform at the Southgate House Revival in Newport, Ky. on Dec. 1 with special guest Cory Branan. Tickets go on sale Friday, Sept. 7 at 10 a.m. here. Tickets are $20 in advance or $22 at the door if any remain. There will also be limited VIP meet-and-greet packages available.
The show is part of touring duties in support of Shires’ recently released album, To The Sunset, which she describes as “all Rock & Roll — no golf!” (a reference to a lyric on the new album’s “Break Out the Champagne”).
The LP has received nearly unanimous positive notices from the music press for the way in which it augments Shires’ amazing (and still getting better) songwriting with electric guitars, synths and other ornamentation perhaps unexpected from an artist so aligned with the Folk/Americana movement. NPR says, “When her distinctive vibrato appears on To the Sunset, as a subtle emotive tool or punctuation in her storytelling, it feels like an electrical charge shuddering through the live wire of her voice,” while Rolling Stone’s Will Hermes writes, “If anyone expected a drift into sentimentality, her writing’s just gotten bolder, with arrangements that stretch the definition of ‘Americana’ to the point of meaninglessness.”
