You know him for his 2011 New York Times Magazine essay in which he “came out” as an undocumented immigrant. You’ve seen his face on the subsequent cover of TIME magazine and may even have seen his documentary, Documented. Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jose Antonio Vargas will speak at the Mercantile Library’s Harriet Beecher Stower Lecture on Tuesday. The lecture’s theme is “writing to change the world.” Given Vargas’ history of putting himself on the line and his work on the Virginia Tech massacre and HIV/AIDS, that may be his slogan, too.
