We here at CityBeat sometimes get accused of solely writing about things happening in Northside. It’s not true exactly, but if it seems that way, it’s likely because the little ’hood has become a fertile breeding ground/hangout for artists and musicians. And, maybe – just maybe – we’re fishing for discounts on our massive bar tabs. This Saturday you can experience Northside in a very Northsidian way – by hanging out at the Northside Tavern and listening to some great music. The Tavern and The Chocolate Horse’s Jason Snell present the first Northside Music Festival this Saturday, showcasing a strong handful of artists that create out of the neighborhood or at least perform there often. There will be music in the outside garden starting at 7 p.m. with Wonky Tonk and The Chocolate Horse. Inside, in the newer back room, Kim Taylor, J. Dorsey Blues Revival, Caterpillar Tracks and The Lions Rampant play, while the old front-room performance space has Culture Queer and State Song. With nearby eateries Melt and The Hideaway providing the grub, the only thing missing is a makeshift Shake It Records storefront. As always (and another reason being a music fan in Northside rocks), the event is free. Get details here.
